Keller at Large

In all the glowing testimonials last week to the late Frank Caprio Sr., the Rhode Island municipal judge whose “Caught in Providence” TV show became a global hit, one word kept popping up: compassion.

For Caprio, that meant seeing the humanity in the defendants (and victims) who sat in his courtroom, and making sure the justice he dispensed respected that humanity along with the law.

Compassion. What the hell is that? We like the Merriam-Webster definition: “a sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.”

But you wonder - is there any room for that in the vile effluent that is contemporary American political discourse?

KPMG found Applegreen’s financials do not meet MassDOT’s goal to sustain or increase revenue, while Global Partners’ proposal does. Yet, MassDOT still chose Applegreen and is now rushing a secretive 35-year lease, handing critical public infrastructure to the foreign company, ignoring conflicts of interest and public records requests, risking $900M in guaranteed rent. Taxpayers deserve transparency, oversight, and accountability before this billion-dollar deal is finalized.
